The heavens and the earth
The very first verse of the Holy Bible – Genesis 1:1 – has been mistranslated. The English translation every adult Christian knows is this: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” That is not what was written. The Hebrew of Moses (transcribed onto some form of scroll or paper much later in time) is transliterated as this: “ B'rëshiyt Bärä élohiym ët haSHämayim w'ët hääretz ” (qbible.com). My preferred source (BibleHub Interlinear) punctuates this, so it a

Spiritual Genealogy
I see television commercials advertising interest in genealogy. Learn more about your roots and where you come from, they say. My wife’s brother loved being able to talk about where the family name originated. My wife’s ex-husband (and thereby the children from their marriage) maintained dual nationality. His familial roots were from Italy; and, he instilled a pride in heritage that valued being Italian over being American (or Southern … from Alabama). The problem with thi

Teach us to pray, like John taught his disciples
In the news recently have been reports of some lengthy or ongoing public prayer held somewhere, with the news of this happening in one place spreading to movements to make the same thing happen in other places. In my own local environment the news has covered a meeting of a similar kind of appreciation for prayer, where music was added to the gathering. The local news cameras showed people (mostly women) with arms raised in the air and obviously in some form of prayer. The

2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15c - Being Baptized by the Spirit and made clean
[ 1 ] Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his master, because by him Yahweh had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. [ 2 ] Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. [ 3 ] She said to her mistress, "If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy." ----- [ 7

Spiritual Discernment, Part 2: The Christmas Story of Luke Discerned
The Christmas Story has long been misconstrued. It has become so commonly known that nobody looks at it with discerning eyes and sees the truth presented by the words. The story is like Jesus told the Pharisees: “I give thanks to you , Father , Lord of this of soul kai of this of flesh , because you have hidden these away from of clever kai of intelligent , kai you have revealed them to simple-minded ones . ” This verse says two things. First, it has Jesus ad

Spiritual Discernment, Part 1: The Basics
The definition of “discernment,” according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is this: “1. the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure; 2. an act of perceiving or discerning something.” The etymology is suggested to come from the Middle French word “ discernement .” In Old French, the infinitive verb “ discerner ” was defined in Old English to mean: “to discern, or to distinguish one thing from another; also, to part, separate, sever, divide asunder; to ma

Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7 - Finding completeness with Yahweh
These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. ----- Thus says Yahweh of hosts, elohe of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters;

Homily for the seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Year C – Where faith comes from
Good morning bus riders! We are now at the seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, or Proper 22 if you count that way. The theme for today centers on faith, or the lack thereof. As I have said before at this bus stop, there is a significant difference between belief and faith . This is hard to grasp, as the Greek word “ pistis ” primarily means “faith” or “faithfulness,” but it is allowed in usage to equally mean “belief, trust, confidence; and even fidelity.” A priest-scholar,

Luke 17:5-10 - Having faith the size of a mustard seed means servitude to the Lord
The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, `Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. "Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, `Come here at once and take your place at the table'? Would you not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and dri

Psalm 37:1-10 - Relax those angry faces
1 Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; * do not be jealous of those who do wrong. 2 For they shall soon wither like the grass, * and like the green grass fade away. 3 Put your trust in Yahweh and do good; * dwell in the land and feed on its riches. 4 Take delight in Yahweh , * and he shall give you your heart's desire. 5 Commit your way to Yahweh and put your trust in him, * and he will bring it to pass. 6 He will make your righteousness as clear as the light * and yo

Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4 - A message carved in stone
[ 1 ] The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. [ 2 ] Yahweh , how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? [ 3 ] Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. [ 4 ] So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous-- therefore judgment comes forth perverted. ----- [ 2:1 ] I will stand at my watch post,

Homily for the sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Year C – Wealthy in Spirit
Good morning bus riders! We are now at the sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, which means our ministry that repays our salvation is well underway. We should be each be Anointed by Yahweh … thus a “Christ.” We should each be a soul that submits to a much higher soul, who we each follow into ministry … in the name of Jesus. Now, I have said this similarly before. It is the path of righteousness that none of us can walk alone. We must be reborn as Jesus, following the lead of
